Any engine has potential.
I'll put it like this, Everybody though the same thing about the sohc d16 and boost. Everywhere you went people would say "why waste your time on that motor when you can swap it out for a b-series and make 300hp on a stock motor". Well I'll tell you why. A stock d16 can handle about 225whp and make 200+ft lbs of tq at the same time. The money you save on not doing the swap can be put to good use by building the stock motor. $3,000 can build a d16 (or f22a) to handle some decent power.
This is coming from someone who spent $2,000 on a b-series swap, $1,000 rebuilding that motor and another $3,500 on the turbo set-up. Am I happy with the set-up? Most definatly. Would I do it again? Of course. But that same $6,500 could have been invested in building the stock motor to handle 400+whp and a turbo set-up to make that power. While i'm about maxed out with my stock motor.
If your looking for a 600whp monster of an engine then yeah swap to a h-series and build it properly. If your looking for about 350whp or so, build what you have and enjoy it. Thats just my advice.
now I may have a different oppinion if you owned a civic because, for most people 300whp is more then plenty on the street so a swap makes good sense. But from what I hear h22's have weak ringlands and do well on mild boost, if your looking for insane power your going to have to build it. The f22 can make as much if not more power then a stock h22.
Do some serious thinking and research because I thought 250whp would be enough for me, Now I realize that I'm going to need about 375-400whp to be where I want to be. My car spends 95% of it's time on the drag strip racing domestics , the other 5% is driving to the track. right now I hold my own against most of them, there are a few that run low 11's that just hand my ass to me, but most of them are high 12second - low 13 second cars that give me a good run for the money, But I still come out on top. I'm now going after those 11 second cars.
