tear down the brake caliper that is the suspected culprit. check for rusts behind the piston, a sticking seal, or anything behind the piston that can cause it to stick.

there's not really much you can do to visually look to see if the master cylinder is gone or not. there are other signs to look for in the master cylinder, but what you're describing might not be visible.
