Typically it takes so long to see the symptoms of a bad altenator, that by that time you've usually degraded the life of the battery as well. Typicaly soon after replacing the altenator, you'll probablly have to change the battery since it is a memory type battery. Memory batteries never go back to the previously full charge as when you bought it. So the battery has become use to the low charge from the old altenator.
I good symptom of the altenator going out is when the lights and accessories are on and you stop. The idle goes down and the lights go dim. Then as you press the gas the lights brighten up again. This is usually a beginning symptom.
I experienced that sympton but, it seems like it only does it when its raining outside.

maybe my ALT belt is a bit loose?
edit: Also wouldnt the Alternator light turn on, on my dash anyway if the ALT was about to go?
