If you have an Ohm meter you can check the coil in the car. Just because the pump is working, does not mean fuel is getting where it should, checking the plug for fuel smell is a good idea. To reset ECU, you pull the battery cable off, but make sure you have the code for the radio first
I think the coil is fine, he's getting spark. He can also pull the 7.5A backup fuse from the fuse box to reset the ECU.
Was the car doing anything wierd before you had the starting problem? Running rough, dying while running, dim headlights?
