a type r is a pretty high compression motor so you would have to lower the compression to get the turbo setup. I would say go NA
10.6:1 is not too high for turbo... all he would have to was invest in some quality tuning and he would make more power then a GSR or LS. Theres a couple guys on here with stock b18c5s running around 8 psi for a couple years.. tuning is key.
