Replace the fuel filter yourself!!! $75 for labor is way too much, and you can do it yourself. It's pretty easy man. That's the first thing I did when I bought my car.

Dirty fuel filters usually cause horrible gas consumption. And yes, your thermostat is stuck open. Replace that too. It's a PITA to replace the thermostat though, but definitely doable.

Replace your spark plugs too.
