Heel-toe downshifting is a technique commonly used in road racing that allows you to smoothly downshift while braking in preperation for a turn. It can be done in any car, though its difficulty varies depending on pedal positions. I recently installed Sparco Grip pedals into my Integra, which make the technique a lot easier.
