Just get a 4,6,8, or 10 external hard drive holder. SATA cables are plenty long enough to reach inside the case through either a drilled hole or an expansion slot.
I was thinking of trying something like that, except the noise becomes unbearable with those external boxes. I may just buy a decent case then add my own quieter fans and put all the hdds in that case, which will be right next to the other case with the rest of the PC guts.
