Yeah, it's more than just smaking them off...old accords have the most completely retarded design of hub-over-rotor. Luckily my 99 is rotor over hub. It's bad enough that anyone that does their own work and plans to do it again, swaps brake parts with first gen CL's to convert to rotor over hub (at least I know this works with 5th gens). The rotor is sandwiched inside the hub and bearing assembly. So you have to take the knuckle off. Also you don't have to have air tools, although they are nice. To break the axle nut loose, just use a large breaker bar and do it with either someone pushing the brakes if you have it up in the air, or do it with the wheel on the ground to hold everything still while you loosen it. I use a breaker bar and tap on the middle of the bar with a mini sledge. For the ball joints, lets just say the best $25 I ever spent was on a ball joint removal tool...the kind with the bolt that won't jack up your ball joint, not the pickle fork that can damage the boot.
