id go for it facing the trunk towards one of the wheel sides, i have mine placed like this. it creates almost another box or enclosure for your speaker. the speaker then uses the panels of the trunk to bounce the sound off. it is just like in home audio, you never put speakers on the carpet floor, all it will do is absorb the sound, as mentioned aboved do it to your taste, i just think this setup gives the loudest and cleanest response
