I had some 15" prelude alloys on my 6th gen I used for winter for a while, and I didn't have any problems but the 5th gens might be different like you say. If you want to keep the wheels, I'd say get some mild 5mm spacers. That should still be safe enough to have enough thread engagement on your lug nuts.

H&R makes some...probably others as well. I think I even remember a guy on here getting some spacers for his stock wheels.
