I don't know what an 87 crx engine bay looks like, but be sure that it isn't something cheap and simple like your radiator or heater hoses. I own a 2nd gen crx, and none of my coolant-carrying hoses are on the driver side except the resevoir, so I'm going to guess that yeah, the seal around your water pump has been compromised.
