That's the auto-adjusting mechanism for the handbrake. But VersuS is talking about the front, so it's supposed to simply push in.

The piston & the slide pins are OK...?? So maybe that leaves the pads themselves. Are you sure the anti-rattle springs are in the right way? Also, do the pads wedge real tight into the caliper bracket? Sometimes I have to file off the paint so they can move.
