The electoral college is a nice check and balance, just like everything else our founding father set up. Brilliantly conceived. However, it was more applicable when news wasn't so easily spread and would be better served in a country like Afghanistan where not everyone has access to news 24/7 like we do. I support the electoral college very strongly in almost all cases...in a country as large as this, it gives little states meaning.
Think about it this way: If it was only about popular vote, Kerry could just spend his time campaigning in big cities like New York and LA, which he already has wrapped up, just so he could rake in all the undecideds and right leaners. Even though they're in the minority, it's still a far larger group than you'd find in total in small towns. The electoral college gives little states and little towns importance in a general election.
