I would have to say much worse would be rats in a leather floor cage where coals are lowered slowly so that they eat the floor of the cage away. Of course place beneath that cage would be a persons stomcah and chest and of course the rats would do anything to escape the searing heat.

Painful, but would it be so painful as to force you to lose conciousness? What about having every bone being broken one by one until you have nothing left.
