5th to 2nd is stupid and he is bound to screw up once and dump the clutch, this should result in his tranny being left in nice working order....

Downshifting involves selecting next gear sometimes two while using the brakes as well (at least in braking situations). Its not like you should just pick the lowest possible gear and waste your clutch trying to use it to slow down...clutches cost too damn much to do that with.
