The keys are not cheap, last I heard it was $80 at a local dealer to have one made up. As far as range its not far at all, the pickup coil is in the steering column just behind where you put the key in.
I had 2 keys made at my Honda dealer for my 98, $30 for the blanks, .5hr labor to program, about $75 w/ tax for 2 keys cut and programmed, with immobilzer chips in them. The guy said they have really come down a lot in price.
