As far as the original topic:
I think all automotive rivalries are completely and utterly stupid. It's funny when I'm talking to someone about cars and they ask me what I drive, to which I respond, "a '94 Civic," and they always look at me like, "OH...your're one of THEM." I just kind of roll my eyes and point out, as I am now...that I like cars. Period. Hell, I even like boats, trains, and especially airplanes. But, I just happen to drive a Civic. Yay me. It's small, not fast, and it's teal. (It does, however, handle fairly well.) I can appreciate any car that goes fast, or turns fast, or just looks damned nice. That's it! Rivalries and trash-talking can suck my nuts.
I completely agree. As i've said, and has been pointed out, I'm not insinuating anyone in particular is a stereotypical ricer here, i just thought the odds of one being here were greater than at a say, truck forum or something. My gf's car is a 626, v6, 164hp, fwd, and its just as fun as my car. well maybe not quite but its still fun. its still pretty quick SOTP and has really light, nimble steering, even if it does tend to understeer. thats why i dont see anything wrong with it, just like your car, or pretty much any of the fwd, light cars. the article, then, was obviously not directed at you, or myself... it was directed at the people who actually do the things it listed.
and as far as i can tell so far no one's popped up saying "yeah, i got all that crap on my car and i LOVE it so **** off" so maybe there's not as much of this ricer crap going on than the nopi nationals has you to believe...
and especially since a couple people mentioned they did autox as well, i might pop on here so often. most of the people i know who are car guys dont ever drive their car (cause they're working on it), and the people who do drive their car only drag race it if they do anything with it.
i was actually thinking that my ultimate project car would be a '72 datsun 240z with a turbo LS1 packed into it. They make crate motors for it in a few kits on the internet that are just small block chevy V8's but the ls1 is cooler and still fits so why not. it doesnt really add much more weight than the stock engine, and its got so much torque it gets going really quick, just in time for the turbo to spool up. all in a ~2600 pound car? put a good suspension on it, some 315's, 1/2" eibach prokits, sub frame connectors... i'd still keep the stock interior if it was good enough.
plus there are really really nice, conservative body kits for the 240... really seems like where they got the inspiration for the 350z.
