Take off the cap & look for damage. That's easy & painless. Next I guess would be checking for proper voltages & signals at any of the wiring connections at the distributor. Got a Helm repair book & a multi-meter?

I wouldn't replace the distributor until I convinced myself it was really the problem. That's an expensive way to diagnose things.
