Actually, open carry is legal in CA. Concealed carry needs a permit - which the closer to a populated city like LA, SD, etc you are, the more likely you are to get turned down for one.
www.packing.org will give you lots of good information regarding laws and whatnot. Just select your state. It will provide you with a summary of the laws regarding weapons
