if you don't care about your game console having a built-in DVD player, that's fine. but to deny the fact that it's a big marketting point for sony is just dumb.

don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to defend the PS2 as being superior in any way. i'm just trying to tell you why it has been vastly more successful than game cube, even though it it several years older. games for game cube are usually great, but they still lack a lot of the big titles. gran turisimo and final fantasy alone are enough to swing an enormous number of people over to PS2. the game cube's hardware is better than the PS2's hardware - i think i've already mentioned this. but if a game's graphics look "unpolished", it is most likely the fault of the developer, not the console. GT3 and FFX/FFX-2 look pretty nice. sure they'd look a helluva lot nicer on game cube or xbox, but they're still far from "unpolished".

but, like you've already stated, I think the PSP will do well because of hype. unfortunately, the systems do have certain labels (PS for adults, Nintendo for kids

)...and people tend to put that into consideration when purchasing systems, instead of actually giving the "kiddie" titles (which apparently means greater controls, more polished graphics, and excellent gameplay :dunno: ) a chance.
there's a good reason why nintendo gets the kiddie reputation. while they have been releasing games like resident evil and other non-child oriented games, their primary market is and always has been mario and the various mario incarnations. they don't ONLY make games for kids, but their most popular ones are. PS2 and xbox get titles like DOA extreme beach volleyball, or vice city..
as for the hype, i think that plays a big role too. so we'll see if hype can allow the PSP to overcome the gameboy. but if nintendo doesn't release a handheld that can compete with the PSP on all grounds, hype won't make a difference. remember that the PS2 was around for years before the game cube came out. nintendo was just losing ground the entire time. if they had been released at the same time, maybe gc would have stood a chance. if they make the same mistake again, and let the PSP take over the market, it'll be nearly impossible to get it back again.
did you happen to miss my last gigantic post? and you never answered why you think nintendo's choice of 8cm DVDs as opposed to full-size DVDs protects them from piracy
