This is not completely true anymore. Sprint rolled out their new text messaging service a few months ago, but your phone has to be compatible with it. I have it on my Sanyo 5500 (aka Sanyo VM4500), and it's so much better because you don't have to sign on the web anymore, so it sends in like 1 second. As far as I know only the latest Sanyo phones have the software for it (Sanyo 4500, 5500, and 7200).
