He's getting all this media attention for a few of reasons:

1. Just because he's a football player, and that sounds interesting to news directors as a sort of like, "sentimental" piece.

2. Opportunistic politicians who want to ride on that media wave issuing statements about how he's such a great American.

3. Assorted other elements in the government looking to give the "war on terror" a positive PR spin.
