It took a while to do, but I painted CORRECTLY. The first picture is what the first one turned out looking like after a few months.



The second pic is my new one that I took forever to do (very thin coats over a long period of time so that everything cured right). For the letters, I just sanded all the paint off with very small pieces of fairly fine sandpaper.
