Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The ABS indicator light is used to indicate a problem with the ABS system.

OPERATION
This warning system turns on the ABS indicator light when one or more of the following abnormalities is detected. This is only a partial list.


When the operating time of the motor in the power unit exceeds the specified period.
When vehicle running time exceeds 30 seconds without releasing the parking brake lever.
When one of the rear wheels is locked during running.
When absence of speed signals from any of the four wheel sensors is detected.
When the activation time of all solenoids exceeds a given time or an open or short circuit is detected in the solenoid system.
When solenoid output is not detected in the simulated anti-lock brake system operation carried out during running at speeds of 6 mph (10 km/h) or more.
To check the ABS indicator light bulb, the light is activated when the ignition switch is turned on. It is turned off after the engine is started if there is no abnormality in the system.


Temporary Driving Conditions
The anti-lock warning lamp will come on and control unit will store problems in memory under the following conditions:
Problem code 5, 5-4 and 5-8, tire adhesion lost due to excessive cornering speed.
Problem code 4-1, 4-2, 4-4 and 4-8, vehicle loses traction when starting from a stuck condition.
Problem code 2, 2-1 parking brake is applied for more than 30 seconds while vehicle is being driven.
Vehicle is driven over extremely rough roads.
If anti-lock warning lamp goes off after engine is turned off, than back on, ABS is operating normally.

Warning Lamp Circuit

If anti-lock warning light does not go on when ignition is turned on, check the following items:
Blown anti-lock warning bulb.
Open circuit between No. 15 fuse and warning lamp.
Open circuit in blue/red lead between combination meter and control unit.
Bad control unit to body ground.
If not loose or disconnected, install new control unit and recheck.
If anti-lock brake warning light remains on after engine is started and LED on control unit does not blink any code or sub code, check for the following:
Loose or poor connection of wire harness at control unit.
Faulty ABS 2 fuse.
Open circuit in white lead between ABS 2 fuse and control unit.
Open circuit in yellow/black lead between fail-safe relay and fuse No.17.
Short circuit in blue/red lead between combination meter and control unit.
Open circuit in white/blue lead between alternator and control unit.
If warning lamp remains on while engine is running, proceed as follows:
Stop engine, then turn ignition switch to On position and ensure anti-lock warning lamp comes on.
Restart engine and check warning lamp. If warning lamp goes off, there is no malfunction.
If warning lamp remains on, stop engine, then open trunk or, if equipped, ABS maintenance lid.
Turn ignition switch to On position but do not start engine.
Record blinking frequency of LED on control unit, Figs. 5 and 6. Read trouble codes.
Control unit can indicate up to three trouble codes. If LED does not light, repeat steps 1 through 3.
If required, turn ignition switch off, then turn on to read LED.
After repair is completed, disconnect ABS B2 fuse for three seconds to erase control unit memory, then turn ignition switch on to recheck.
Memory is erased if connector is disconnected from control unit or control unit is removed from body.
