Whoa, you're seriously misinformed. Most civilian AR-15 variants are chambered in 5.56 NATO, not the tigher .223 Rem. Hell, even my Saiga .223 (AK) is chambered in 5.56 NATO, not .223 as marked.

That rediculous muzzle velocity (~3000fps) makes the little 50-some grain 5.56mm rounds disintegrate within a body, making it a very effective military round. That's the only reason 5.56 NATO is still in military service, but now that we're using M4's and CAR-15's with 14.5" and 10.5" barrels respectively with the new 62gr SS109, the 5.56 lost the one advantage it once had over 7,62 NATO.

You can add those to practiacally any firearm you want, assuming you have the time, money, clean record, and paperwork abilities to buy a suppressor.
