You're right that they had the 315 hp motor, but that version was only available in 2001-2002. (It weighed 3131 pounds, so it was reasonably quick.) The 1998-2000 version had 240 hp and there was no 2003 version.

Remember, like most VTEC cars, the S2000 has a gearing advantage that compensates for its torque disadvantage. You can read more about why this is important here. (The S2000 also weighs 300+ pounds less than the M Roadster.)
