Since your dad's a 30-year mechanic, he'll know about the oil light. It works the same way as they did 30 years ago. There's a pressure switch & a light bulb. The computer has NOTHING to do with that circuit.
Those pressure switches can fail. But if your oil pressure is actually low, you might want to check if your oil pickup screen is full of crud. It's not that hard to take off the oil pan.
