You'll find that aftermarket modifications don't really increase the car's resale or value. There are a select few that will pay more for mods, depending on their knowlegde, the mods, etc.
It is kinda funny that you said the dealer didn't know what he was sitting on...but it sounds like that makes two of you...you didn't know what you were buying.
As far as "romeo" talking about potential...no clue. Sure, if throw a lot of money at it, it'll become faster, but it would take a swap/build and turbo to really make it a fast car.
The springs may still have the manufacturer's markings on them, the same if the shocks are aftermarket. Jack up a corner and have a look. As far as the motor, if looks stock, it probably is. But the block do have the engine code stamped into them. F22 for example.
