I believe the add-on CD player in your '90 is designed to interrupt the antenna lead so the antenna only raises when the main portion of the headunit is being raised.

Most head units simply raise the antenna whenever they are turned on.

One other possibility you might want to look into is an S2000 antenna conversion. Do a search for "s2000 antenna" and you should find plenty of info.
