That's exactly what I was going to suggest. It's possible that the fuel filter has simply died. It happened on my GTi, and the symptoms were exactly as you describe with your Teg. Given that the car is now 10 years old, I'd consider replacing it regardless of the filter's physical condition. BTW, how many miles are on this car... is your friend in need of timing belt replacement?
