When I changed mine, I waited until it had almost an empty tank. Then I opened the gas cap to releave pressure. Then I slowly removed the bolt in the banjo for the fuel filter (i had a rag around it to make sure I would get any fuel that came out. Hardly any fuel came out.
One thing I did that I am embarrased about was I broke the bolt of in the banjo when I was tightening it back up. I had to drill it out. Don't be a dumbass like me. It only needs to be torqued to about 13 lbs ( if I remember correctly).
