Traditionally, a choke coil is used as a filter. Being that it's being put in line with the power wire, it's being used as a low pass filter. This would help keep alternator whine from getting in to the radio on the power input to the radio.

You can try it without it, it won't hurt anything, but if you notice alternator whine, you might want to put one in.
