My guess is he means the far-and-away sales leader, the Ecsta 712.
The Ecsta MX is a great tire but the only 16" sizes it comes in are 205/55-16 and 225/50-16 so that's not really an option in this instance.
In size 205/45-16 the next steps up from the Yoko ES100 in performance are the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 and Pirelli PZero Nero which are both $119 a pop from tirerack (as opposed to $80 each for the ES100).
The Kumho Ecsta 712 is 10 bucks a tire cheaper than the ES100 but the ES100 provides a noticeably higher level of grip.
So once again, to reiterate over and over why the ES100 is so popular, it's the stickiest dry/wet tire (i.e. no Falken Azenis) you're going to get at this price point.
