the fast idle valve would explain the jumping rpms on startup. i had mine changed not too long ago. in cold weather, it would feel like someone was stepping on the gas with the rpms dancing between 1500-2000K. in warm weather, the rpms would dip really low then spike between 400-600.
the engine stalling could be caused by a jammed EGR valve. i went through that too. my rpms would dip around 200 at a complete stop, then die.
thanks; i will take a look at the egr valve; i also checked the fast thermo valve saturday, and although i haven't warmed up the car at 3000 rmp as the book says (i did it on and off since i had to check the fan, etc), when the fan came on, there was slight suction at the valve port in the throtle!
a problem i have here though is that NO STORE has the fast idle thermo valve; so, my only options are junk yards (likely, hard to get parts, or a part like this may be just as well bad) or the dealer -- read bug $$$?
