thanks; i will take a look at the egr valve; i also checked the fast thermo valve saturday, and although i haven't warmed up the car at 3000 rmp as the book says (i did it on and off since i had to check the fan, etc), when the fan came on, there was slight suction at the valve port in the throtle!

a problem i have here though is that NO STORE has the fast idle thermo valve; so, my only options are junk yards (likely, hard to get parts, or a part like this may be just as well bad) or the dealer -- read bug $$$?
