I think a car's reliability is utterly random. I don't think brand or even maintenance has any effect on it. I really don't know what effects it but, here are some examples from my family:

Aunt's '96 Honda Civic, flawlessly maintained and garage-kept: started blowing head gaskets at ~45,000 miles

Cousin's '92 Honda Accord, rountine maintence, kept outside: approaching 100,000 with no problems

Cousin's '85 Ford Escort, not maintained at all, driven hard: lasted over 200,000 before traded for a new car

Grandmother's '80s vintage Hyundai, oil might be changed once a year if it gets lucky: still running like new, who knows how many miles

Dad's '72 Firebird w/454 swap, flawlessly maintained, garage-kept: has run 11-flat in the 1/4 any day of the week for 32 years, daily driven for 32 years

My '98 S-10, routine maintenance: numerous driveline problems
