I have a 97 V6 and I had the same problem. Turned out that my EGR valve was working well, but the ports were dirty. The extended emissions warranty took care of the cost but the cleaning took care of the problem. You could buy a Chiltons/Hanes manual and attempt to do it yourself if you are mechanically inclined.
