a clutch doesn't pick what gears will engage fine and not engage fine. it has to be some weak syncros allowing the gear to pop out. have you tried tapping the gas to spin up the syncros while shifting into 2nd or 4th? If you try that and it shifts properly...its definitely going to be your syncros.
