the hid bulb is within the shield. the bottom is pretty much completely shielded with the exception of a small slit (approx. 1/8") near the base of the shield. the hid lighting reflects off the top of the housing and shines down on the ground.. the bottom is shielded so it doesn't blind anyone (pretty much like the lexus). if you look at the lexus hid pattern, you'll notice that you only see light reflected off the top half of the reflector, not the bottom.
for high beam, the bulb retracts back so the arc of the bulb will be where the slit is letting the light shine through to reflect off the bottom of the housing and shine up.
i dont' have any lighting pictures yet.. i'll try to take some tonight.
and the black housing doesn't really have much effect on lighting whether positive or negative..
