I'll bring up a point I don't think anyone has touched on. Street racing is dangerous, I don't think it should be legal, but I have been known to put the hammer down at a red light or two. Having said that, there is a good reason that we not only have rules against street racing, but in general very conservative speed limits. The typical American approach to driving is that it is a chore, or something that has to be done to get to work or pick the kids up from school. That's why cup holders and trunk space is more important to Americans than tight suspensions and responsive engines. If you ask a German about driving in America, they laugh. And the Autobahn exists because they take driving the way it should be: a serious exercise in paying attention to all the details of driving a car. Germans have no need to street race, or race anyone period. Because when they need to get it out of their system, they can exercise that feeling of power and control in a responsible manner and a controled environment. If we were permitted to drive our interstates at 130 mph, there'd be fatalities all over the place. But the Autobahn has one of the lowest fatality rates of any national interstate. Why? Because they take it seriously, the cars are built for it, there are stiff fines and penalties for things such as offensive gestures, not wearing your safety belt, and running out of gas, and lane discipline is more important than anything. And the people abide by that because they know that's the only way you can safely travel at such speeds. To do such a thing would take a total rethinking in how American driving habits are, and the infrastructure to support it.
