Check your distributor. Only 3 13mm bolts pull it off, make sure the shaft moves freely with the distributor cap off. Mine did what you described when it went. Another indicator that it's going bad is that it's hot enough (after it starts squealing) to burn you. That's a bad sign.

If it seizes, it can break your cam. Worth a check.
