If you can it would be wise to take a car to a mechanic that you trust. If you can't and you have to check the car out yourself, you are going to need some tools which are kind of costly.
I just bought my 3rd, 3rd gen Accord which has 166k on the odometer. I just did a quick overlook of the suspension and motor (inspected for leaks and checked the timing belt), then I did a compression test and tested the charging system. The car has a little loud valvetrain but I expected that from a car with so many miles on it. Been driving the car now for a couple of weeks and it runs very strong.
Like I said if you can and have the tools handy then by all means go ahead and check the car out following the same method I took. If you can't then take the car to a trust worthy mechanic.
GoodLuck!
