It's one thing to be unskilled in a language. It's another to make no effort whatsoever to learn the native language of the area you're in. That's just being an asshole.

if i moved to portugal, i wouldn't expect anyone to speak english to me. i'd freakin' learn portuguese! when i lived in france, a lot of people wanted to speak english with me, but i never demanded it of anyone. i spoke french most of the time. i really don't think it's too much to ask of anyone who wants to live in the states to learn english.
