Maybe it's just me but I'd pay the $150 or whatever for the nice CNC milled billet aluminum piece as opposed to building my own thing out of 20 bucks worth of wood. But hey that's just me, and that's assuming that the company that builds the nice spiffy ones is indeed reliable.
Of course, I am a bit of a camera dork so I'm more willing to pop for that kind of thing.
