You could use a low amperage, high output LED, but in order to install such a light, the amount of fabrication work would be nuts. It would require drilling a hole in the back of the door latch assembly, bracing it, doing the requisite wiring and making it weather-proof, etc.
I suppose one could use a switched relay of an alarm to activate and de-activate the lights, but my honest advice would be to leave well enough alone.
I could see this project taking a fair bit of time and money, and that's assuming nothing is broken in the process.
