Remember, back in those days the factory rated power outputs of these engines was UNDERrated for insurance reasons. You could expect a 425hp 426ci Hemi to turn around 500hp "out-of-the-box." Add some headers, a cam, and a big Holley carb and you were untouchable.

I went to an AMC car show about a year ago, and some guy had an AMX with the 390... and said although AMC factory-rated it at 315 hp /425 tq, the real numbers were something like 375 hp / 475 tq (!!).
