High compression eliminates your margin error concerning acceptable air/fuel ratios without detonation. By starting out with a lower compression engine, you can "sneak up" on the proper tune, along with increasing boost to meet your power goals. With high compression, if you're not nearly dead on from the beginning, detonation will kill ANY piston, especially the ring lands.
