I doubt it's a broken cam or timing belt. What sound did it make when it died. A broken timing belt would make a lot of noise when starting it since it would be flapping around in there. Definately not the coil but it could be the igniter. Also I doubt the distributer since it too would make a nasty noise prior to going out. Check fuel, just pull off the fuel line at the rail and turn the key (no smoking while doing this). It's not the best way to do this but the quickest.
