IMO, it's a growing pain for our country. We're still a young country on a global perspective, and we act like it by not knowing what exactly we want to call right and wrong so we skirt around using gray-area vocabulary and call it politically correct. Much like everything in history, this too shall pass. I bet if you tried to explain to her that ignorance and being politically incorrect are two different things, she would either, A. go Jerry Springer and flip out or B. stop listening and get that blank-stare thing going.
