Its not really HOW MUCH as it is how easy it is to pull air into the motor.
Look at it like this. close off one side of your nose and breath in through your nose. then open both sides and breath in.

The easier it is for the motor to "breath" the better it preforms. same with exasust systems. the better the car can breath out, the better it can run. but you dont want it to breath it or out TOO much, then your defeating the pourpose(sp)
It all has to be balansed just right for the maximum power gain.
